Positive input ventilation (PIV) is essentially a whole house ventilation system, intended to create clean and healthy living environments. PIV works by introducing a stream of fresh, filtered air into your property, it then encourages the older interior air to move out of the property, this could be for a clear air space, or otherwise, to push out air that is affected by condensation and other damp related issues.

Typically, Positive Ventilation Units will be installed in the loft for houses, and on the wall or the wall in flats, and is ducted to the common areas such as hallways or landings.

How Positive Input Ventilation Works?

PIV units typically operate a slow to moderate speed and the system is continuously drawing air into your property, while also replacing it multiple times over a 24-hour period. This ensures that the air within the property stays fresh, clean, and filtered. So, how exactly does it work?

1. The system draws fresh air into your roof void where it is then filtered by the PIV unit, installed in your lift.
2. The filtered air is tempered using the in-built ventilation system and is then introduced into rest of the property.
3. This airflow creates a slight positive air pressure which forces the old and stale air to exit the property through points such as the door, vents, windows, and other leakage points.
4. In areas such as bathrooms and kitchens, they may require additional extraction fans that in conjunction with the PIV unit, will create a complete whole-house ventilation solution.

When is PIV necessary?

If you are dealing with condensation, damp, black mould, or allergy-related respiratory issues, then this system could be just what you were looking for.

Did you know black mould and damp can not only cause damage to your property, but also to you too. Black Mould can affect the health and well-being of those living in the property… read more about this here.

However, PIV is not necessarily only for people with issues in their home. You may be interested in installing this sytem for the long-term health benefits of leaving a fresh, clean, and filtered environment. A Positive Input Ventilation system would never be the wrong choice.

What are the benefits of Positive Input Ventilation?

Prevents Mould and Condensation
High relative air humidity tends to condense on surfaces as the air temperature drops. Areas affected by condensation are prone to mould. Although a PIV System will assist in maintaining relative air humidity at a stable level to prevent condensation and mould.

Health benefits
Mould and black mould can be harmful to both your property and those living in it. It can contaminate the air and cause both short-term and long-term health benefits.

Reduce your energy bills

PIV Units will circulate heat back into your living space, from your radiators or heaters, allowing you to potentially save on your energy bills.

Ventilate your entire home
Positive input ventilation systems circulate the air across the whole property.

Minimal to No Noise
The unit produces a gentle flow of air that will make little to no noise.

Can my home have PIV installed and is it expensive?

The Positive Input Ventilation system can be used in both old and new properties, it can also aid in heating your property as it recirculates warm air back into the living space, which of course will help with energy savings too. Aside from heating related systems, this system is cost-effective as it operates at around a cost of only 1p per day in energy consumption.
