This material consists of loose fibres which – as the name suggests – are blown in through holes drilled in the brick outer leaf. In the UK, it’s crucial for cavity wall insulation to be rainproof, but studies by the Building Research Establishment reveal “There can be an increased risk of rain penetration if a cavity is fully filled with insulation, ie moisture is able to transfer from the outer to the inner leaves resulting in areas of dampness on internal finishes.”. Essentially, if rainwater gets through the outer leaf and penetrates the CWI, it will then transfer to the inner leaf, causing damp.
Furthermore, dampness isn’t solely caused by rain; increased condensation due to poorly filled cavities can lead to black mould and damp walls. This highlights the dilemma: fully filled cavities may lead to damp from rainwater, while incomplete filling can cause damp through condensation.
